Porterdale, or “Georgia’s Historic Mill Village” is located
in Newton County along the banks of the Yellow River. Originally the town was called Cedar Shoals
until given the name Porterdale after Porterdale Mills, Inc and Oliver S.
Porter in 1917. The “mill” was first
called Cedar Shoals Manufacturing Company whose primary purpose was wool carding and cotton processing. Over
time, the mill(s) became successful and eventually the town grew around
it. In the early 1960’s Porterdale Mill
was recognized as the world’s largest producer of twine.
Presently, the mill has been transformed into an apartment
community, Porterdale Mill Lofts, with 154 loft style apartments and additional space for restaurants
and retail stores.
