Newborn is a small rural community located in Newton County,GA.  First known as Sandtown, the name was changed to Newborn sometime around 1839.

Porterdale, or “Georgia’s Historic Mill Village” is located in Newton County along the banks of the Yellow River.  Originally the town was called Cedar Shoals until given the name Porterdale after Porterdale Mills, Inc and Oliver S. Porter in 1917.  The “mill” was first called Cedar Shoals Manufacturing Company whose primary purpose was wool carding and cotton processing.  Over time, the mill(s) became successful and eventually the town grew around it.  In the early 1960’s Porterdale Mill was recognized as the world’s largest producer of twine.

Presently, the mill has been transformed into an apartment community, Porterdale Mill Lofts,  with 154 loft style apartments and additional space for restaurants and retail stores.

Mansfield, GA is a quiet, rural community located about 40 miles east of Atlanta in Newton County.  The town came into being as a result of the completion of the Middle Georgia and Atlantic Railway, which ran from Gordon to Covington, in the 1890’s.  The story goes that the business men responsible for developing the township pledged to name the town after whoever was still sober after the celebration of the initial sale of lots.  Apparently, that individual was Mr. Mansfield.

Beaver Manufacturing Company is the major employer in Mansfield.  They manufacture industrial fibers which are primarily utilized in the hose industry.  The 6,400 acre Charlie Elliot Wildlife Center is also located here offering numerous outdoor activities to nature lovers from the surrounding area.

Oxford is located in Newton County, GA and was established in 1939 by the Methodist Episcopal Church as the birthplace of Emory College. The town was named in honor of John and Charles Wesley’s alma mater in England.  In 1972 the entire town, including Oxford College, was designated as a shrine of the United Methodist Church.

Oxford College is one of Emory University's nine academic divisions and serves as “home” to freshmen and sophomores who are enrolled in the university’s liberal arts program.
