Watkinsville, GA is both the largest city and county seat of
Oconee County. It was originally the
seat of Clark County until Athens laid claim to that title in 1872. This action angered and motivated the locals
to vote to create a new county named after the Oconee River which formed its
easternmost border so that Watkinsville could once again enjoy the status of
being a county seat town.
This charming city retains a small town atmosphere and is
located only minutes south of Athens and about an hour east of Atlanta. Visitors can take a step back in time by
visiting places such as the Elder Mill Covered Bridge, the historic Eagle Tavern,
the William Daniel House and Ashford Manor.
In the early 1990’s Watkinsville was revitalized when it
applied for and received a Transportation Enhancement Project grant that
reworked and beautified its downtown business area, adding brick sidewalks,
planters, simulated antique lamp posts, benches, new curbing and much needed
landscaping. Now, this area is known as
Town Center and is home to Ashford Manor and their “Concerts on the Lawn”, the
historic Haygood House, and restaurants such as “Girasoles”, “Chops and Hops”
and “Mirko Pasta”.
There are so many art attractions in Watkinsville and Oconee
County that this area has become affectionately known as “The Artland of
Georgia”. Art aficionados can enjoy a

to hand blown glass. Art attractions in
the area include the Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation, The Chappelle Gallery,
